Cozy But Make It Elegant: A Home That Finally Feels Like You

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through my links — at no extra cost to you. I only share things I genuinely use and love. Thank you for supporting this little corner of the internet!

Can I tell you something I probably shouldn’t admit on the internet? For years, my house looked fine. Perfectly fine. Beige. Inoffensive. The kind of home that nobody would ever complain about — and nobody would ever really notice either.

And then the kiddo left. And suddenly I found myself standing in my living room thinking: whose house is this, exactly? Because it wasn’t mine. It was the house we built for a family, for chaos, for function. Not for me.

So I started over. Slowly. Intentionally. Not with a full renovation or a designer budget — but with a few very specific pieces that made me feel something when I looked at them. That made me feel like the house was finally, actually mine.

Here are the three that started everything.

💡 The Light That Made Everything Feel Different

I have a confession about ceiling lights: I ignored them for fifteen years. They were just… there. Functional. Forgettable. Until I found this milk glass and antique brass flush mount and genuinely could not stop thinking about it.

“Milk glass is the design world’s best kept secret. It makes light feel warm, soft, and almost romantic — without trying too hard.”

The antique brass finish is what gets me every time. It’s not shiny or cold — it’s warm and a little worn-in, the way good things are supposed to look. It sits flush to the ceiling which means it works in rooms that don’t have high ceilings (looking at you, every room in my house), and the milk glass globe diffuses the light so beautifully that you almost don’t want to turn it off.

I currently want one in every single room. My family thinks I have a problem. They are correct.

Why this works for cozy elegance:

  • Milk glass softens light in a way no other fixture can — it instantly makes a room feel warmer
  • Antique brass adds age and character without being heavy or dark
  • Flush mount means it works in any ceiling height — no special installation required
  • It looks like it belongs in a much more expensive home than it actually costs

Why I love it: I want one in every room. That should tell you everything.

🪟 The Drapes That Changed the Whole Room

Here is the most underrated interior design tip I have ever received: if you want a room to feel expensive, hang floor-to-ceiling curtains. That’s it. That’s the whole secret.

Not short, sad curtains that hover above the windowsill like they gave up halfway. Long, dramatic, all-the-way-to-the-floor curtains that make your ceilings look taller and your life look more together than it actually is.

“These slate blue velvet curtains are the reason I stopped buying paint samples. Why paint when you can drape?”

The color is what sold me — slate blue sits somewhere between a soft gray and a dusty navy, and it works with literally everything. Warm wood tones. Antique brass hardware. White walls. Cream furniture. It adds color without commitment, which is exactly what I need as someone who has repainted the same room four times and still isn’t sure about it.

The velvet texture is the other thing. In sunlight it looks almost luminous. In the evening it looks rich and cozy in a way that makes you want to pour something and sit down. Which, in my empty nest era, is the entire goal.

Styling tips for velvet curtains:

  • Hang the rod as close to the ceiling as possible — it makes any room feel taller instantly
  • Let them puddle slightly on the floor for a more dramatic, luxe look
  • Pair with antique brass or gold curtain rings for a cohesive warm aesthetic
  • Layer with sheer white curtains underneath for privacy while keeping the light soft

Why I love it: These are the reason I stopped looking at paint swatches. Add color without painting — genius.

🐇 The Rug That Started Every Conversation

I did not expect to fall in love with a rug. And yet here we are.

I’ve had perfectly serviceable rugs my whole life. Neutral. Durable. The kind that came from a cart at a home goods store and blended into the floor like they were embarrassed to be there. This boho deer rug — which I’m calling the rabbit rug because honestly that’s what it looks like to me and I’m keeping it — is none of those things.

It has personality. It has whimsy. Every single person who has walked into my living room has stopped and said something about it. Not because it’s loud, but because it’s unexpected. It’s the kind of piece that makes people realize you have taste — and more importantly, that you’re not afraid to use it.

“The best thing about a statement rug? Everything else in the room gets more interesting just by being near it.”

The color options it comes in are genuinely impressive — I went with a version that ties in the warm and earthy tones in my space, but there’s something in this line for every aesthetic. And it’s washable. WASHABLE. Which, if you have dogs the size of small horses like I do, is not a nice-to-have. It’s a requirement.

How to style a statement rug without it overwhelming the room:

  • Keep your larger furniture pieces neutral — let the rug be the personality in the room
  • Pull one color from the rug into your throw pillows or curtains for a cohesive look
  • Layer it over a simple jute or sisal rug for added texture and warmth
  • If you have dogs — and I do — always check for washability before you fall in love

Why I love it: Every single person who visits asks about it. And it’s washable. Dog moms, this one’s for us.

✨ The Takeaway

Here’s what I’ve learned in my empty nest redesign era: you don’t need a full renovation. You don’t need a designer. You need three things that make you feel something when you walk into the room.

A light that makes you want to stay up a little later. Curtains that make the room feel like it was always supposed to look this way. A rug that makes you smile every single time you walk past it.

Start there. The rest follows.

“Your home should feel like you — finally.”

All of these pieces are linked below — shop each one directly or browse my full Designer Looks For Home list at benable.com/amiefromhere/designer-looks-for-home-41 for even more finds. I’ll be sharing more of my favorite designer-look-for-less picks as I keep working through the house, room by room, one beautiful thing at a time.

Save this post. Share it with someone whose house needs a little more of them in it. And if you end up getting any of these pieces, I genuinely want to see what you do with them. 🏡

Red Light Therapy for Women Over 40: The At-Home Glow-Up Nobody Warned Me About

I’ll be honest — I rolled my eyes at red light therapy for a long time. Felt very “rich lady with too much time” energy. I was not interested.

And then I tried it.

And now I own four devices. So.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: you don’t need a fancy spa or a $400 investment to get started. You just need to know what to buy. I’ve done the research (and the experimenting) so you don’t have to.

Why it actually works — in plain English

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to get into your skin and basically wake your cells back up. For us — women in our 40s and beyond — that means things like more collagen, less puffiness, better sleep, and skin that starts looking more like your skin again instead of a tired version of it.

The wavelengths you want are 660nm (red light, great for skin) and 850nm (near-infrared, goes deeper — good for inflammation, joints, muscle recovery). Most quality devices use both.

The other thing nobody tells you: it’s not a one-and-done situation. Think 10–20 minutes a day, 4–5 days a week, and give it a solid 30 days before you judge results. It’s a slow burn — but girl, when it kicks in.

The devices I’m actually using

Hooga Compact — where to start

Hooga Red Light Therapy Compact Device

If you’re not ready to commit to a full panel (totally valid), this is where I’d tell you to start. It’s small, it’s easy, and it covers both wavelengths. I use mine for my face, neck, hands — anywhere I want to be intentional. It’s the “dipping your toes in” option that a lot of people end up loving so much they never feel the need to upgrade.

Hooga Face Mask — for the skin girls

Hooga Red Light Therapy Face Mask

Okay if your whole thing is your skin — texture, tone, the fine lines that showed up uninvited — this mask is it. You put it on for 10 minutes and just… exist. Read something, listen to a podcast, lie there and breathe. The coverage is even across your whole face and it’s genuinely one of my favorite parts of my evening routine now.

Shop on Amazon →

Hooga Red Light Reading Lamp — the sneaky one

Hooga Red Light Reading Lamp

This one doesn’t even feel like a wellness device, which is why I love it. It’s a clip-on reading lamp that happens to emit red light — so while you’re reading before bed, you’re passively doing therapy on your face and hands. And because there’s no blue light, it actually helps you sleep better too. I think about this one as the laziest possible way to be consistent, and I mean that as a compliment.

Shop on Amazon →

Viconor Full-Body Panel — when you’re all the way in

Viconor Full Body Red Light Panel

This is the upgrade. Full-body coverage, both wavelengths, adjustable stand. You do 15 minutes and you’re done — face, neck, arms, legs, all of it. If you’ve tried a smaller device and you’re hooked, this is where you end up eventually. It’s what I reach for most mornings now.

Not a doctor, not medical advice — just a person who got obsessed and wants you to know about it. If you have specific health stuff going on, check with your provider first.

What’s In My Work Bag: The Essentials I Actually Use Every Day

Leather tote work bag

I have a thing about a well-packed work bag. It’s one of those small daily rituals that genuinely sets the tone for your whole day — like, if my bag is chaotic, my brain is chaotic. If it’s organized and stocked with the things I actually love? I feel a little more like I have my life together.

I’ve tried a lot of things over the years and landed on a pretty solid lineup. Here’s what’s actually in my work bag right now — the stuff I reach for every single day.

All of my favorites are linked in my Work Bag Goods list on Benable — easy one-stop browsing.

👜 The Bag Itself

Leather Tote Bag for Women Large Work Handbag

Leather Tote Bag — Large Work Handbag

I love the look of this bag. It’s large, has a vintage-inspired feel with soft faux leather, and it’s actually spacious enough to fit everything on this list without bulging. Two interior compartments, a hidden back zip pocket, and a detachable shoulder strap so you can wear it however works for you. It checks all the boxes for a chic everyday work bag that doesn’t scream “I bought this on Amazon.” Shop on Amazon →

💧 Hydration First

Bink 36oz Big Bottle

Bink 36oz Big Bottle

I love my Bink in all sizes, but the 36oz is the one that lives in my work bag. It’s glass with a silicone sleeve (so it doesn’t feel like you’re carrying a laboratory experiment), and the flip cap makes it easy to drink without unscrewing anything. I genuinely drink so much more water on days I have this with me. Shop on Benable →

And yes — I also have a YETI Rambler 20oz Tumbler in there for my coffee. Non-negotiable. Shop on Benable →

🥗 The Lunch Situation

Packing my own lunch is one of the best things I’ve done for my wallet and my energy levels. But it only works if you have the right containers.

BAGSMART Double Deck Insulated Lunch Bag

BAGSMART Double Deck Insulated Lunch Bag

This is my current lunch bag obsession. The double-deck design is genius — I keep my actual lunch in the bottom section and snacks or ice packs up top. It’s insulated, has a shoulder strap, and honestly looks cute enough that I don’t feel weird carrying it alongside my regular bag. The quilted puffer style is very much giving soft girl work bag energy. Shop on Amazon →

Overnight Oats Glass Jars 17oz

Overnight Oats Glass Jars

These 17oz glass jars with lids and spoons have completely changed my breakfast game. I prep overnight oats the night before, grab the jar on my way out the door, and I have a real breakfast at my desk without the chaos. Perfect for breakfast on the go. Shop on Amazon →

📓 Stay Organized (and Make It Pretty)

Right now I’m carrying the Blue Sky Day Designer 2026 Planner in Rose Pink Floral. The floral cover honestly makes me happy every time I open my bag. Also in there: the Kipling Gitroy in Bridal Lavender pencil case and the Rifle Paper Co. Garden Party Zip Pouch for the little things. Shop on Benable →

✨ The Little Things That Matter

Touchland Power Mist Hand Sanitizer

Touchland Hand Sanitizer

If you are still using regular hand sanitizer gel, I need you to stop and try Touchland. It’s a fine mist spray that smells incredible, dries instantly, and doesn’t leave your hands feeling sticky or dried out. I have one in every bag I own at this point. Shop on Benable →

Cozy summer reading with books and coffee

There is nothing — and I mean nothing — that signals summer to me like a great book and nowhere to be. Whether you’re actually at the beach, on the back porch with a cold drink, or sneaking chapters during your lunch break, these six books are exactly what your summer reading list needs.

I’m a romance and women’s fiction girl at heart, and this list reflects that fully. These are the books I’ve been recommending to every woman I know this season. Curl up and enjoy.

Beach Read by Emily Henry

1. Beach Read — Emily Henry

If you haven’t read Emily Henry yet, this is where you start. Beach Read follows two writers — a romance novelist and a literary fiction author — who end up as neighbors for the summer and dare each other to write in the other’s genre. It’s witty, it’s swoony, it’s genuinely funny, and it has more depth than the cute premise suggests. Emily Henry is the queen of this genre for a reason. Shop on Amazon →

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

2. Every Summer After — Carley Fortune

This one wrecked me in the best way. Every Summer After is a dual-timeline story about two people who fall in love over a series of summers at a lake house — and what happens after everything falls apart. If you love a slow burn, a gorgeous setting, and that ache of something almost lost, this book will consume your entire weekend. A Goodreads Choice Award winner and absolutely deserving of it. Shop on Amazon →

Till Summer Do Us Part by Meghan Quinn

3. Till Summer Do Us Part — Meghan Quinn

Fake marriage, summer setting, enemies-to-lovers energy — yes please. Meghan Quinn is so good at writing the kind of romance that makes you laugh out loud one page and fan yourself the next. This is pure, joyful summer reading. Another Goodreads Choice Award winner and the perfect companion for a lazy afternoon. Shop on Amazon →

The Summer of Skinny Dipping by Amanda Howells

4. The Summer of Skinny Dipping — Amanda Howells

A coming-of-age summer story set in the Hamptons with all the warmth, nostalgia, and bittersweet beauty of a summer that changes everything. If you want something that feels a little more literary while still being a perfect beach read, this is it. The kind of book that stays with you after you’ve finished it. Shop on Amazon →

The Summer After You and Me by Jennifer Doktorski

5. The Summer After You and Me — Jennifer Doktorski

Set on the Jersey Shore in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, this one has heart. It’s a summer romance with real emotional weight — about rebuilding, first love, and figuring out who you are when everything changes. A beautiful, easy read that’s more meaningful than it first appears. Shop on Amazon →

The Relationtrip by Elana Johnson

6. The Relationtrip — Elana Johnson

A slow-burn standalone romance — the special edition paperback comes with gorgeous new cover art, full-color edges, and bonus content. If you love that slow, delicious build of two people who clearly belong together but just won’t admit it yet, this one is for you. Perfect for a long travel day or a lazy beach afternoon. My Daily Skincare Routine for Women 40+ (The 4 Products I Actually Use Every Day)

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through my links — at no extra cost to you. I only share things I genuinely use and love. Thank you for supporting this little corner of the internet!

I’m not a 12-step skincare person. I never have been. What I am is someone who has finally — finally — found a small handful of products that make my skin feel genuinely good every single day. No guesswork, no overwhelming routine, no spending a fortune.

These four products are my daily non-negotiables. I use them consistently, I love how my skin looks and feels because of them, and honestly? Simple is working for me in my 40s in a way that complicated never did.

1. Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser

I ADORE this cleanser. Full stop. It’s one of those products I repurchase without even thinking about it — it’s just always in my bathroom.

Purity Made Simple does exactly what the name says — it cleans your face without stripping it, removes makeup, and leaves skin feeling soft rather than tight. For daily use it’s perfect. It’s gentle enough to use morning and night, and it doesn’t require a whole second product to get your eye makeup off. One step, done.

If you’re looking for a place to start with a simpler routine, this is it.

2. Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner Facial Mist

This one smells so fresh and I love how hydrated my skin feels after I use it. I spritz it on after cleansing and it immediately feels like a little reset — cooling, calming, and genuinely lovely.

Thayers is alcohol-free (important — alcohol toners are too harsh for mature skin) and the rose version has that soft, clean scent that makes the whole routine feel like a little self-care moment rather than a chore. It preps your skin beautifully for whatever comes next.

3. Philosophy Hope In A Jar Water Cream

Such a good summer moisturizer — and honestly, a great year-round option if you prefer something lighter. The water cream texture absorbs instantly, leaves zero greasiness, and gives skin this subtle glow that looks like you slept well and drank all your water.

The hyaluronic acid is doing real work here. I notice a visible difference in how plump and hydrated my skin looks on the days I use this. For women 40+ who notice that skin doesn’t hold moisture the way it used to — this one actually addresses that.

4. Saltair Pink Beach Serum Gel Deodorant

I know deodorant doesn’t always make the skincare list — but this one earns its spot. I love it because I can match it to my Saltair lotion, which gives the whole routine this cohesive, intentional feel. The serum gel formula with 5% AHA actually treats the skin, which traditional deodorants never bother to do. One of those small upgrades that makes a regular morning feel a little more luxurious.

Welcome to My Next Era

Hi, I’m Amie.

If you’ve found your way here, chances are you’re in the middle of something — a shift, a transition, a quiet (or not so quiet) reinvention. Maybe the kids are leaving the nest. Maybe you just turned 40 and something clicked. Maybe you woke up one day and thought: wait, what do I actually want?

Same.

This blog is called Amie From Here because that’s exactly where I’m starting — from here. Not from where I thought I’d be, not from some perfectly curated version of my life, but from exactly where I am right now. And honestly? It’s kind of the best place I’ve ever started from.

The Soft Girl Era, But Make It 40+

There’s a movement happening — women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond who are done with the hustle aesthetic, done shrinking, done waiting for “someday.” We’re leaning into softness. Into pleasure. Into the little things that make a regular Tuesday feel like something worth savoring.

I call it the soft girl era for grown women, and I am fully, unapologetically here for it.

What does that look like for me? A really good candle. A linen set that makes me want to stay in bed just a little longer. Skincare that actually works. Finding a trending piece and making it my own. Saying yes to things that feel indulgent and realizing they’re actually just nice.

What You’ll Find Here

This isn’t a blog about having it all figured out. It’s about figuring it out in style, with good products, and with a lot of grace for yourself in the process.

  • Trending finds — the products I’m genuinely obsessed with, curated for women who know quality when they see it
  • Soft life inspiration — how to create a life that feels good, not just looks good on Instagram
  • New chapter content — for every woman navigating a transition and looking for someone who gets it
  • Style & beauty — the stuff that’s working for real women in their 40s, not 22-year-olds

A Note on Affiliate Links

Some posts on this blog contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them — at no extra cost to you. I only share things I genuinely love or would buy myself. Your trust means everything to me.

Now — pour yourself something good, get comfortable, and welcome to the next era.

I’m so glad you’re here.

— Amie
