Big-Ticket Holiday Gifts: What’s Worth Buying Now vs. Waiting for Black Friday

This post has affiliate links, which means if you shop through them I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps keep this blog running.

I do budgets for a living. So when a $300 gift shows up on a list, I do the math before I do the shopping.

Here is the short version. Most people are being careful this year. PwC’s holiday outlook puts the average planned gift budget at about $708, and 79% of shoppers say deals decide when they buy. Roughly 40% of holiday spending lands in the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30.

That is exactly why big-ticket gifts need a plan. Here is mine.

The 3-Question Test Before Any Big Purchase

1. What is the cost per use? A $300 Dutch oven used 100 times costs $3 a meal. A $300 gadget used four times costs $75 a use. Same price tag, very different purchase.

2. What does the price history say? Pull up a price tracker like Keepa or CamelCamelCamel before you buy. If today’s price is close to the lowest it has ever been, stop waiting. If it is sitting at the highest, wait.

3. Will she actually want it? The best splurge gift is something she has looked at twice and talked herself out of. Not something that only looks impressive in the box.

Timing: Where the Big Deals Tend to Land

Retailer guides for 2026 point to a pattern. Best Buy pushes laptops, premium TVs and major appliances. Target leans on home goods, bedding and kitchen items in early November. Amazon runs an October event and a Cyber Monday round, with a focus on its own devices. The takeaway: match the item to the retailer instead of shopping every store on the same day.

These are patterns, not promises. Prices move, and I would rather you check the price history than trust me.

5 Splurge Gifts That Pass the Test

The cost-per-use champion. Soups, braises, bread and one-pot dinners all live in this pot, and cast iron lasts for decades. It carries a 4.7-star rating on Amazon. See the Le Creuset Dutch oven.

Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum, $389.99

Nobody squeals over a vacuum in the moment. They squeal in February when the floors are done in ten minutes. It is a practical gift that gets used weekly, which is the whole cost-per-use argument in one appliance. It is also a good one to put on a price tracker. View the Dyson V8. It has a 4.3-star rating.

Breville Bambino Espresso Machine, $299.95

A daily coffee habit at $6 a cup adds up fast. A compact espresso machine turns that into a one-time cost, and this is the entry point into real home espresso. Full breakdown of the whole home café ladder is in my home café gift guide. See the Breville Bambino.
