Okay, can we talk about something for a second? Something I think every one of us has done at least once, if not a humiliating number of times?
You walk into Ulta. Or Sephora. Or even the beauty section of your local department store. You have one thing on your list. ONE. You’re going in for sunscreen. Maybe a CC cream you saw somewhere. You know exactly what you want. You have a plan.
And then the lights hit you. The scent hits you. A very put-together person in a very chic uniform walks up and says, “Can I help you find something?”, and suddenly your brain just… leaves the building.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
For days when I’m skipping foundation entirely (the beach, the farmers market, the backyard while Derek has a project going), I want a dedicated SPF I actually trust. La Roche-Posay is dermatologist-recommended and this mineral formula uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, no oxybenzone, oil-free, and it’s gentle on sensitive skin. Can I just say how genuinely happy it makes me that a mineral sunscreen this good exists for under $12? The Good Molecules SPF 30 is fragrance-free, hydrating, mineral zinc oxide, and it doesn’t leave a white cast. I keep this one in my bag for midday reapplication. It’s the budget-friendly option that absolutely does not feel budget-friendly. If I didn’t know what I’d paid for it, I’d assume it was four times the price. This one is a quiet little gem. ($11.99)
ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica SPF 50+: The Splurge Worth Having
Okay, this one is a real investment and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But here is the difference between ISDIN and a regular sunscreen: it doesn’t just protect your skin; it actively helps repair existing sun damage. It contains DNA Repairsomes and Vitamin E, it’s dermatologist-recommended, and it goes on like absolutely nothing. No greasiness, no white cast, sits beautifully under makeup. If you’re at the point in life where you’re thinking seriously about protecting the skin you have and undoing some of the damage from those sunscreen-free summers in our 20s… this is the one. ($73)
The Foundation Situation
Because “no makeup” makeup is still makeup. It just requires different products.

This foundation was made with our skin in mind, and it shows. The serum formula gives you a healthy, lit-from-within glow instead of that flat, cakey finish that can make us look older than we are. Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten Powder Foundation
If you haven’t tried a baked powder foundation, I want you to try this one. The Laura Geller Balance-n-Brighten has over 68,000 reviews on Amazon: it’s not secretly famous, it’s just actually that good. Handmade in Italy, color-correcting, buildable coverage, and it gives the most natural-looking matte finish I’ve ever seen in a powder. I use it over my serum foundation on days when I want extra coverage, or alone as a light base on low-key days. No caking, no looking powdery, just really nice skin. ($32)
The Finishing Touches That Actually Matter
Clinique High Impact Mascara
Some products you just don’t replace. Clinique High Impact Mascara is one of them. It’s ophthalmologist-tested, allergy-tested, safe for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes, and it makes lashes look like actual lashes, not spiders, lashes. It doesn’t clump, it doesn’t smudge under your eyes on a hot day, and it makes me look like I’m fully awake even on mornings when I very much am not. On days when I’m going bare-faced with just SPF, this mascara is still happening. It’s the five-minute shortcut to looking like I tried. ($27)
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
You’ve done all the work. You’ve done the SPF, the foundation, the mascara. Now you lock it in. The Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is a cult classic for good reason, up to 24 hours of wear, waterproof, transfer-resistant, and it sprays in such a fine mist that it just pulls everything together and makes your skin look real. In summer heat especially, this is not optional. Three spritzes, close your eyes, done. Your makeup at 8pm will look like it did at 7am, even if the day in between was a full one. ($34)
The Point of All This
You don’t need to walk into a store and leave an hour later feeling overwhelmed, confused, and significantly lighter in the wallet, with a gorgeous perfume you didn’t plan on and zero of the sunscreen you came for.
