Our house has good bones, and over the years it’s slowly become more and more us.
But beyond any big renovation projects, I’ve learned something: the small seasonal refreshes are the ones that make our house feel different. Alive. Like someone who loves living there is paying attention.
Summer is my favorite season to refresh because you don’t need much. The light does half the work.
Swap Heavy Textiles for Something Light
This is the highest-impact, lowest-effort thing you can do for your home in summer. Swapping out your throw pillows and blankets for lighter versions completely changes the feel of a room.
I switched our living room pillows to decorUhome Linen Pillow Covers in a natural beige this year. They look expensive, they feel appropriately breezy for summer, and the whole room immediately felt like it got a fresh coat of air. Under $40 for a set, and the difference is dramatic.

Bring Something Living Inside
Plants in summer don’t require much effort. They want the sun that’s already flooding through your windows. But they change a room more than almost anything else.
My current obsession is a lifelike faux Monstera plant: big, architectural, zero-maintenance, and gorgeous against our walls and dark floors. It looks like it was styled by a professional. It was not. It was purchased on Amazon and put in a corner.

Add One Thing That Makes the Air Smell Beautiful
I’ve written about this before and I’ll keep writing about it: scent is the most underrated design element in any home. You can have a perfectly decorated room, but if it smells like an old house, pets live here, it doesn’t feel as good.
My summer home scent this year is Mrs. Meyer’s Basil Room Freshener: it smells like a garden and sunlight and something clean and alive. I spray it in the morning when I open the windows and it sets a whole tone. I don’t forget to blow it out or unplug it when I leave for the day. Just spray and go.

You don’t need a renovation budget to make your home feel like summer. You need a lighter pillow, a plant in the corner, and something that smells like the season you’re actually in.
What’s one thing you do every summer to refresh your space? I’m always collecting ideas.
